What we think
A Hidden Barbadian Jewel
The Atlantis is definitely off the beaten path—a rare gem. This petite hotel makes us feel more like we are staying in a private vacation home than a hotel. With every need met by a welcoming staff the hotel embraces its guests as members of the community.
The Location
Beautiful and Culturally Rich Neighborhood
The historic Atlantis Hotel built in 1883 is located on the secluded east coast of Barbados in the town of Tent Bay, 23 miles from Bridgeport. Tent Bay is where islanders go to get away from it all. There is plenty for the adventurous traveler, with dramatic breakers of the famous “Soup Bowl” sought by surfers and the rugged Bathsheba coastline within hiking distance along local trails. Here visitors are treated to the real flavors of Barbados from its small fishing villages, street markets and quiet countryside to the traditional cuisine of restaurants favored by locals. It offers the isolated solitude of a tropical island along with the exotic and rich cultural experience only found off the well-worn path of larger resort towns.
" The location on the East Coast is breathtaking with a perfect harbour and the sound of the surf always in the background."
The Rooms
Your Sanctuary
The rich history of the island comes through in the beautifully restored colonial period hotel that is both timelessly elegant yet full of modern comfort and style. This boutique style hotel offers a choice of eight rooms, six in the main house and two apartments alongside the pool. Open the doors and windows of the rooms to taste the fresh air and soak in the ocean views. The ocean-front rooms here are so close to the water that it seems you could reach out the French doors and touch it! The cottages are on the beach, mere steps from the beautiful blue Caribbean. Step out onto the balcony to watch fisherman in the bay or let the peaceful sounds of the local village provide the perfect backdrop while you read. Rest and rejuvenate in the tranquility of rooms that feel like extensions of your private home rather than a hotel.
The Beach
A Breathtaking Selection of Beaches
The eastern coast of Barbados offers some of the most breathtaking views on the island. The beaches near the Atlantis Hotel are no exception, while still offering their guests the exploration of country and culture they seek.
Atlantis’ own beach is a narrow strip of coarse sand and rugged rocks, great for exploration or a small snorkel excursion. Perhaps the ideal Bajan beach is Bathsheba Beach isolated and stunningly beautiful with the east coast’s characteristic rocky crags and boulders projecting through pristine white sands. Here you can take long deep breaths of the salty air and soak in the revitalizing Bathsheba Pools. Snorkling and Scuba expeditions are also available at this beach that is sure to become a favorite.
The stunning beauty of Barbados is on display at Cattlewash Beach so named for its interesting history. Local farmers would drive their livestock into the crashing waves at the shoreline to be cleaned and healed by the saltwater. Though it is entirely unsuitable for open water swimming due to the wild nature of the water, natural rock pools provide sanctuaries for your own relaxing soak. Tide pools beckon exploration offering a host of colorful flora and fauna for the curious. Lifeguards are generally on duty, and food and drink is available.
