Although Antigua is not known as a major shopping venue, there are plenty of options from hand crafted island souvenirs to fine jewellery, perfumes and electronics in the two main duty free shopping areas.

Antigua distills two fine rums: Cavalier and English Harbour-5 year, which can be purchased in any liquor store at very low prices.

While you are browsing through the local pottery, woodcarvings and hot sauces, be sure to pick up a jar of locally made fresh pineapple jam, it is to die for. For that matter, buy one of these fresh small black pineapples for a treat you won’t soon forget.

Many of Antigua’s shops are located together throughout St. Mary’s Street and High Street, in Heritage Quay and Redcliff Quay. Some shops are open Monday to Saturday, but this varies greatly from place to place. Duty-free items include: designer fashions and leathers, fine linens, Cuban cigars, jewelry and top shelf liquor. The Goldsmitty at Redcliff creates some unique jewelry pieces, and FashionDock at Heritage is where you’ll find the Italian designers: Gucci, Prada, and Moschino.

Antiguan products are also available for purchase such as local pottery, straw work, rum, hats, shells and hand painted crafts.  Local vendors in the outdoor market can be somewhat aggressive, so stay in the shops if you don’t want to be hassled.

If you looking for a wide variety of books on the Eastern Caribbean, check out Best of Books & Made in Antigua at either their St John’s location or their shop on Friar’s Hill Rd. Head up to Fig Tree Studio Art Gallery, tucked away in the rainforest, for a look at Antiguan artist, Sallie Harker’s wonderful work.

A great shopping expedition is to head to Harmony Hall, in Brown’s Bay Mill, for lunch and shopping overlooking Nonsuch Bay. Built in 1843, this plantation house and sugar mill has a delightful collection of local art to browse while you dine on lobster or fish.

Another boutique worth checking out is Seahorse Studios and Gift Shop at Falmouth Harbour or their sister shop at English Harbour, the Seahorse Art Gallery. You will find some exceptional sea- related paintings and watercolors to remind you of Antigua’s beautiful beaches and tranquil waters.
