Antigua has a wide selection of restaurants from five star facilities offering gourmet dining to a fish and chips van offering typical English fish and chips- sans newspaper. Grab fresh grilled lobster right on the beach where you can dig your toes into the sand or local Antigua food from vendor stalls. With the beaches as the main attraction, many restaurants and bars are scattered along the coast. These restaurants serve a wide variety of delicious cuisine, both international and local. Due to seasonal closings, it is always advised to call in advance for times and directions.
Some of the fine dining establishments on the island include the five-star, Le Bistro, a famous French restaurant located at Hodges Bay.
Sheer Rocks is another wonderful dining choice for either lunch or dinner. Although part of the Cocobay Resort, Sheer Rocks is open to the public with an excellent menu and the views from this seaside rock cliff are amazing. Reserve a bed for sunset, order some tapas and a glass of wine from their well chosen wine list.
Hemingway’s Caribbean Café is housed in a charming West Indian style wooden cottage in the heart of St. Johns, a stone’s throw from the cruise ship docks and the main shopping area. It is upstairs on an open air terrace and overlooks the hustle and bustle of the capital city. Lunch and dinner is served in this relaxing tropical setting.
For a lingering French meal, plan to go to Catherine’s Café where you won’t be disappointed by the delicious food or the view of Nelson’s Dockyard: try the lobster risotto.
Other English Harbor favorites are Hamilton’s Wine Bar and Bistro, and the Italian Abracadabra; all great stops on your way to Shirley Heights. La Bussola, a family run Italian restaurant, is difficult to find in the Runaway Bay area, but definitely worth the effort. Their spaghetti pescatore is one of many amazing dishes.
Another “must visit” in the heart of St John’s is Café Babula, which has a fantastic French-Mediterranean menu.
