Taxis are plentiful, but can be expensive. The government of Antigua fixes the rates, so they do not have meters. Always discuss the price of the fare up front before accepting the taxi.
Rental Cars are available from all the major rental companies and they will issue you an Antiguan license as long as you can provide a valid driver’s license from your home country. Don’t forget to drive on the left side of the road. A temporary driver’s license must be purchased at a local police station or a rental car agency for about $20 (USD). Most rental car agencies are located at the airport with some outlets at major hotels and English Harbor.
Bus Service is an inexpensive option for seeing the island but not really recommended. Times, schedules and routes are unpredictable. The two major bus stations in St John’s are near the Central Market and on Independence Avenue, near the Botanical Gardens. Buses are easily recognized by the letters “HA” or “HB” on their license plates.
Scooters, bicycles and mopeds are also an inexpensive way to cruise the 15 miles of paved roads on the island and eliminate the hassles of finding parking spots.
